I came across it and it looks pretty interesting..

I have no idea, but it actually looks pretty cute. Good luck finding out! Maybe it's just one of those spin-off pets that was just made a little later, cos it looks a bit more sophisticated than the older spinoffs from 1997-ish

You can clearly see it's not a Tamagotchi rip-off. It looks more like Dr. Mario style puzzle game with perhaps virtual pet caretaking option included.

The front and back cover (of the package) gives a hint it might be related to some anime (animation) show but I didn't recognize which one. If you think that there is like 30 or 40 new animation shows starting/running in Japan every year, no wonder nobody can remember them all.

Also the pics of these many monsters in the back of the package gives image that this might be some sort of "collect them all" monster game in the style of Pokémon and all it's plagiates. (First Pokémon GameBoy games came in Japan Spring 1996 and Pokémon anime started in Spring 1997)

Yeah, it looks pretty cool and I'm very tempted to buy it and see what it is..But I feel guilty lately for spending so much money on tamagotchi related merch. X_X

It actually just looks like a handheld game, and not a virtual pet.  The back animation on the packaging looks like falling ovals, and it looks like a tetris-style game.

I think you're right. The characters used look just like the ones in Kirby's Avalanche, which was a tetris styled game for the SNES.

I know quite enough to help unravel this mystery. There was a game released in Japan (Which later made an American release in the GBA) which I think was called Puyo Pop. If you've played Kirby's Avalanche or Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, It was the exact same thing. Puyo Pop, however, used these different characters and you played the role of the girl on the box. (and a special tidbit of info, Has-Bean from Mean Bean Machine was actually called Carbuncle in Puyo pop)

No wonder the girl look familiar. This must be some kind of pocket-size adaptation of Puyo Pop

After searching some time in Wikipedia, I came towards this little article;

Looks like both, the "Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine" and "Kirby's Avalanche" are actually Puyo Puyo games released in west covered with Sonic and Kirby characters and themes. After those, Puyo Puyos were start to release here under name "Puyo Pop".
