So you got a new Tamagotchi and wonder how it works? Here are the basics you'll need to know.

First of all, I'll put latest updates section and contents and then we'll go onto the guide.

Latest Update: Added Connecting section and contents.

Contents

1. Starting Up
2. Controls and Icons
3. Check Meter
4. Feeding
5. Cleaning Up after Messes and Curing Illnesses
6. Growth Rates
7. Discipline
8. Games
9. Entama/Tamagotchi Plus Connection

1. Starting up.

Most start in the same way. Pull out the tab. If you can't, screw off the back panel, remove the battery and then the tab should easily slide out. Then an egg should appear, press the middle button and set the time. How you set the time depends on version.

Old Tamagotchi: A to set hours, B to set minutes and C to set clock.
New Tamagotchi- A to scroll through digits, B to confirm and C to go back, just scroll to the end to finish.

Some are special like the Yasashii Tamagotchi, press Select for the hours, Cancel for minutes and the Check Meter button to confirm.

Once that's done wait 1-2 minutes for the egg to hatch.

2. Controls and Icons

The controls remain the same for all Tamagotchi (except Yasashii). A to scroll, B to select, C to cancel. Yasashii? Press the button with the picture showing what you want to do.

Now I'll list the icons in order. Since there are a lot of Tamagotchi available, I'll just show Generation 1 and 2, Plus, Entama, Yasashii and Angelgotch (since a lot of people want Angelgotchi nowadays...)

Generation 1/2: Feeding, lights, game, medicine, toilet, check meter, discipline, attention
Tamagotchi Plus: Check meter, feeding, toilet, game, IR connection, discipline, medicine, lights, notebook, attention
(Tamagotchi Connexion version 4 is the same, but replace Lights with Mail)
Entama: Check meter, feeding, toilet, game, IR connection, mail, medicine, items, notebook, attention
Yasashii: Feeding, happiness, care, flush, lights, check meter (be aware that these are all backlit buttons)
Angelgotchi: Health meter, food, game, toilet, praise, medicine, lights, attention

3. Check Meter

The things on the Check Meter are basically the same. You will always see a hunger and happiness meter and an age and weight counter. Most have a Discipline counter too.

The Hunger Meter (Onaka) displays how hungry your Tamagotchi is. You can top this up by feeding your Tamagotchi meals.
The Happiness Meter (Gokigen) displays how happy your Tamagotchi is. You can top this up by feeding your Tamagotchi snacks (not recommended unless you have to), or by winning games (highly recommended!!!!)
The Age and Weight counter displays how heavy and how old your Tamagotchi is. Every 24 hours unpaused time the Age counter goes up by 1. Feeding increases weight and playing games loses weight. (In Angelgotchi the weight counter is replaced by Angel Power.)

The Discipline counter shows how disciplined your Tamagotchi is. This is hard to explain.
The Job/Gotchi Point screen shows what occupation your Tamagotchi has and how many Gotchi Points you have. This is on Entama.
The Gotchi Point screen shows how many Gotchi Points you have. (Version 4)
The User Name screen shows your username for Tamatown (Versions 3 and 4)
The Gender/Generation screen shows your Tamagotchi's gender and generation.
The GUTS points screen shows how high your Tamagotchi's Intelligence, Style and Kindness is. This is on Entama and version 4.

4. Feeding

Most Tamagotchi are the same for feeding. Some are different though. Meals increase weight by 1 lbs/g/oz, snacks by 2 lbs/g/oz.

For a generation 1/2. Choose the first icon, then choose Meal or Snack. Easy!
For a Tamagotchi Plus. Choose the second icon, then choose Meal or Snack. Again, easy...
(For version 4, you will need to choose which meal or snack in the menu)
Entama. Choose the second one, then Meal, Snack or Cooking. Meal and Snack are basically the only ones you really need.
Yasashii. To feed a meal, press the feeding button. To feed a snack, press the Happiness button, then choose the bottom option (I think)
And Angelgotch. Choose the second one and choose Pie or Chocolate. If a bat attacks your Angelgotchi while feeding it chocolate, tap the screen to chase it away.

5. Cleaning up After Messes and Curing Illnesses

Choose the toilet/flush icon and all messes will disappear. Magic!
If a skull/tooth icon appears next to your Tamagotchi, choose the Medicine icon, you may have to do it twice.

6. Growth Rates

It varies depending on Tamagotchi. Right now I'll just say for Generations 1 and 2 and Tamagotchi Plus/Connexion/Connection. Note that all these times are UNPAUSED TIMES.

Tamagotchi Gen1/Gen2:
Baby-Child - 1hr
Child-Teenager - 72hr
Teenager-Adult - 72hr
Adult-Secret (if applicable) - 150hr (I think)

Tamagotchi Plus
Baby-Child - 1hr
Child-Teenager - 24hr
Teenager-Adult - 72hr
Adult-Oldie - About 150hr
Adult-Matchmaker visit - 72hr
Adult+baby-Baby - 24hr + 1 Night

7. Discipline

Disciplining is different depending on different Tamagotchi, and of course the icon is in different places.

Generation 1/2: The Discipline Icon is 7th. There is no praise/scold options, it's only Scold.
Tamagotchi Plus: The Discipline Icon is 6th. You can choose Time Out/Punish or Praise.
Entama: There is no discipline.
Yasashii: When the care button (4th button) is backlit, just press it. Only scold.
Angelgotchi: The Discipline Icon is 5th. There is no praise/scold options, it's only Praise.

And this is the reasons why you will ever need to discipline.

On Yasashii, if you ever see that care button backlit just press it. Yasashii as that Wink.
On Angelgotchi, if you see your angel doing anything special and is surrounded by stars and has the attention icon lit, go praise it, this will increase the good deeds meter.
On Generation 1/2, if it beeps and lights up the attention icon, and you check its status and it has at least one heart in happiness and one heart in hunger and is not ill, go discipline.
On Tamagotchi Plus, if it does the same as above, go to the discipline icon and choose "Time Out" or "Punish" (depending on whter it is Connexion or Connection). If it has its back turned or is crying, and has at least 1 heart in both happiness and hunger, praise it.

8. Games

The games are different depending on Tamagotchi.

Generation 1- Guessing game. Press A if you think your Tamagotchi's gonna look left and B if you think it's gonna look right. Get at least 3 out of 5 right and you WIN!
Generation 2- Number guessing game. Your number is on the top left of the screen. Press A if you think your Tamagotchi's number is lower and press B if you think your Tamagotchi's number is higher. Get at least 3 out of 5 right and you WIN!
Yasashii- Food Guessing Game. Press the Care, the Flush or the Check Meter button to choose a box to open. Care is the top right box, Flush is the bottom left box and Check Meter is the bottom right box.
Tamagotchi Plus- Top game is Dance, bottom game is Jump. To play Dance, just memorise and copy the shown moves. A is left, B is to jump and C is right. To play Jump, just jump the hurdles using A or B to jump.
Angelgotchi- Jump the shooting stars using A or B.
Entama- Card matching game, clothes catching game and hammer game.

9. Entama/Tamagotchi Plus Communication

*NOTE: I do not have an Entama, but have a Tamagotchi Plus-level Tamagotchi so some information may be misleading.*

To connect two Tamagotchi Plus go to the fifth icon (love heart, just normal IR icon) and then press B. You must do this on both Tamagotchi Plus or it won't work.

Sometimes it will fail, it will show this by having an X appear at the bottom of the screen between the two love hearts. In this case, press B again.

Entama Connecting is very involved. The first screen shows "Entama", "Dekatama" and "Keitama".

Select Entama and you get the options: "Game", "Present Give", "Present Receive" and "Marry". In Game you have the options "Tamaire (no idea)" and "Karaoke". Under "Karaoke" you may choose "Rock", "Pops" or "Enka". In "Present Give" you have "Food", "Treasure Box", "Present" and "Seasonal Item". "Present Receive" just goes straight onto the connection and so does "Marry".

Whew. And Dekatama... dunno, but it's for the Deka Tamagotchi in Japan.

"Keitama" has "PC-Keitai" and "Tamasute". "PC-Keitai" gives you the options "Tamatown" and "Items". "Items" gives you your travel tickets and "Tamatown" gives you a password for http://e-tamago.com. "Tamasute" is for the TamaStation in Japan, and I've never seen one so I don't know.
