Well I've never had one, to tell the truth. I've only had the simulators, so I get a pretty good feel of what they were like. But still, for those who have had one/have one now...

Do you remember:

-no going through additional submenus to feed, just click and go
-the simple game that took you not as much time as the modern ones
-the "pet" concept still very evident and not too realistic with the shop and all that
-being able to play games any time you want, not having to worry about balancing weight
-a lot less characters, none with specific gender
-not having to worry about families or skill points or genders
-everything going straight to the point (e.g. choose the game icon and it goes straight to the game)

Anything else you'd like to add?

One more thing about the original 1997 Tamagotchi is the fact that they get so needy towards the end of their life. They are almost as needy as a newborn Tama would be. I found that the Angelgotchi got most demanding during it's later years, and the thing is that you cannot feed an angelgotchi snacks as a substitute for happiness. I enjoy the original Tamas better, but the demand level can be tough sometimes if you are busy in school or work. I don't think connections get demanding like this.

The lower care levels for babies and older adults is probably to encourage younger children to play 'em as they'd survive the kid's neglect better.

I always liked the look of the old Tamagotchi over the new ones. I like it actually being an egg, and the character taking up most (or all) of the screen. Even the Connection v1, they look like slightly displaced ovals with, in the case of the newer Tams, useless antennae to try and look like a 'high-tech gadget'.

I finally found a mirror of that famous Tamagotchi simulator! My marutchi races across the screen on my too-fast-for-the-program computer...

you can get one from ebay.com

well, to me the tamagotchi ancestors are small and cute! very compact Cheesy it's nice
the design and stuff...

and it's closer to your heart.. bcos of the less feature, you really are caring for a "pet"
not a creature that can go shopping and travel by UFO...

I agree with Jiro on the fact that less features are one of the nicest things about the original Tamas. They are not complicated and at the same time they are not boring Wink. One thing I really noticed about the original Japanese Tamas (like P1, P2, Angel etc..) is that you could play with them and actually *know* what you were doing from your past experience with US P1/P2/Angel Tamas. You just have to compare the screens of the US and Japanese Tamas and match them up Smiley.
