Ive been thinking for a long time now about getting a snake for a pet. My parents always taught me to be afraid of snakes growing up, (copper heads are all over Virginia, and they are HIGHLY venemous) but now that Im living on my own, the idea of a pet snake is really starting to grow on me.
Has anyone here had a pet snake? If so what kind do best with handeling?

I was thinking about maybe getting a ball python, because Ive heard that they like to be held, and will wrap themselves around your hand and be perfectly content. Does anyone know if thats true, or what other snakes are good for first time owners?
Ive heard corn snakes are good pets for first time owners too, but they dont like to be held..which is something I really want in my snake.

Any advice? Grin

I've never had a snake, but my brother did. He unfortunately chose one that gets very very long when it's older. This led to many difficulties. I do believe he had to give up his pet because of care taking difficulties. But alas I'm not 100%, I don't talk to him.

So the only advice I know of is... research research research.. make sure you get the one you want and the one you feel you can be capable of taking care of during it's young and older stage. Also make sure you can afford the costs of feed, I hear they can be quite expensive pets.

Best of luck.

A ball python is a good beginner snake. I don't own any snakes, but I do know a lot about them because I subscribe to Reptiles Magazine. (Because I have a lizard and I've always been interested in reptiles.) Corn snakes, to the best of my knowledge, don't dislike handling, I've actually heard they're gentle and enjoy being handled. A corn snake or a ball python is definitely my reccomendation, they don't grow to be gigantic and they're gentle. Like Mimitchi said, research your choice thouroughly if you decide to get one. And of course, make sure youre absolutely positive you want one, because some snakes can live a long time.
