I've been discussing, with crystyl and a few others, about whether feedback or comments were preferred on Log postings. Some members may prefer that their Logs not include 'dialogue'. They just would like an on running data type Log for their own use. One member I spoke with didn't mind information and questions but didn't want chit-chat. And still others were very open to the feedback and chit-chat and they couldn't dream of not having interaction about their ventures. All of these different preferences are understandable.
So what we were thinking is that maybe an icon or smilie could be used to indicate whether or not the person wanted feedback or not. Maybe something they could post within their postings at the end or in the subject line so the reader knew it was for...
1. viewing purposes only
2. questions/info only
3. open for all feedback
Your thoughts?

My feeling on this subject is that this is a discussion board. Anyone who posts a log on a discussion board without expecting people's response didn't think through what they were doing.
If they wanted a monologue, they should use a website or a LiveJournal with comments turned off.
I feel that it is understood that any posting on here is fair game for a response from other users.
I believe that the issue is not whether people want there to be a dialogue about their logs. When they say they don't want "chit-chat", I believe they mean that they don't want their thread to be hijacked with non-relevant discussion. This applies to all threads, not just logs. Questions or discussion that doesn't directly relate to the subject of the thread ought to get their own thread, as they well deserve.
Ironically enough, this post by Snickerdoodle is an example of a post in the wrong spot (sorry Snickerdoodle!). This post belongs in
this section
.
Of course, that's just my opinion. I defer, as always, to the Queen and the Lord.
Edit: removed quotation of Snickerdoodle's original post since it is now its own thread

As I am still 'new' here, I am unfamiliar with all the boards. And I've tried to be very careful on where I place stuff and even to the point of not posting things because of that reason. Thinking now, I should have gone with my first thought of emailing it.
I was led to believe Mimitchi would like feedback and comments on how to better her place, as if that were possbile. It's already wonderful.

So here's the questions I wanna ask:
What do you think I can do to make mimitchi.com a better site?
The one thing I'm sure of is adding Connection Version 2-4 info. Is there anything else though?
I'm just looking for feedback - negative or positive. Be blunt, I can take it ^^ I know there are some things on the site that are ugly lol.
So anyways.. I know that's really general, but honestly I'd love to hear any thoughts that anyone has.
Thank you for your time ^^
Please move it or delete it as you see fit.
``````````
Update after topic moving:
Oooh, I see. She wanted feedback just on Mimitchi.com and not this forum.
First this item... Don't feel you have to holdback because you are uncertain of where to post. We don't get mad when we have to move topics or split topics - it's just part of the job of moderating a board. No ill thoughts are there when we must do this, so post away!
(PS: This guide might help, but if you have any questions feel free to ask.
The second part.. the other feedback was about Mimitchi.com Tamagotchi Planet the website ^.^
Yes that was the mistake of not seeing the division of the two. Thank you.
Your thoughts?
Now to address this issue in particular. Because this is a chat board, people are going to post or not post as they feel need. While log posters are free to say "Please give me comments" or "I'd prefer no comments on this log", we do not want to put a restriction on people who do want to post replies to any topic they want.
Basically I agree with Elana and after discussion with Brendan, we are both in agreement that restricted posting is not the way we'd like to go with the community.
My suggestion to those that want to have logs but don't want comments: As Snickerdoodle suggested, Post at the end or beginning of your log "No comments wanted please" or something similar. Also there is the suggestion that the author get a Freewebs.com account like TL has done, that way you have full control over comments (rather you want them or not) and content. We don't want to lose anyone or scare anyone away, but at this time restricted posting is really not something we are entirely interested in.
(Brendan and I have talked on and off about a blog type site on mimitchi.com for users, at this time it is an idea only and may or may not happen - however this is quite another topic)
Comments on those feeling like they don't get enough comments on logs: People will post if they feel the need to comment and people will just read. There's no way to intice them to post, I guess other then asking questions within the log and that would prompt answers. However.. some people are readers and some people are posters. The best you can do is keep asking for feedback and those who wanna comment will. Some people are shy on chat boards and don't like to comment for personal reasons. Some people just don't have the time, but they like reading. I personally try to comment whenever I have a comment or question. But sometimes I'm in a hurry and RL calls soo.. I don't always comment even when I want to. *shrug* It's just one of those things. ^.^
Finally the idol chitchat point I understand fully. We are here to help. If someone posts in your thread (any thread, not just logs) and you feel it's really hijacking your topic let us know via PM. We can split topics and move to other boards, etc. We also give warnings (and further action if necessary) for excessive behavior that is against the rules (the warning usually clears the situation up).
I've been very loose with the logs because I want people to feel they are free to express themselves. We change things as we see if they appear obvious, but I'm very cautious with logs. That is very much almost a persons own little space on the board and I wouldn't want to interfere too much. BUT If the author would like some changes, we are here to help out. Anyone is free to ask for assistance with problems, etc. We may or maynot always agree with you, or make the changes, but history has shown that most requests are very logical and we are happy to provide help as needed. That's what we are here for - to make this place the best it can be for everyone. ^.^
I agree that the Log is almost like the author's private space. Thank you for that privilege.
I hadn't even thought of restricted posting in logs. That might prevent any form of comment.
For me, I would really appreciate people adding in something like...'feedback please' or 'no feedback required' or something similiar. That might clear up some confusion of having to guess the author's preference.
My desire is to respect the space of others but sometimes that's hard to accomplish if details are unknown.
Thank you for taking time to address this issue.
Sorry, my original post was supposed to go in the feedback topic, so I had to edit.
Anyways, this is such a great community, I would think if someone asked for people not to comment,(or anything else)
then others would respect that decision and comply, without it having to be inforced.
Kind of an unwritten law, although law seems too extreme a word. Unwritten guideline I guess.
I agree 100% with you Fry. And I believe this is what should happen. If someone doesn't want comments, they need to write that to make others aware of that, or naturally on a chat board they might end up with comments.
Regarding the comment about making two separate boards, we are currently not going to support that idea at this time for many reasons, including the following:
1) Of all the members registered, only 127 have ever posted.
2) Only 34 members have ever posted 30 or more times.
3) Only 26 members have ever posted more then 50 times.
4) Only 18 logs have been posted in in this month.
These numbers are low and I'd only be interested in another board if the traffic really warrented it. Right now things are small and there's no need to create a whole new board when a person can simply write "please don't post comments" or they can get a freewebs account for full control over their material.
Ultimately, as stated before, I am not interested in making a restricted posting forum within this community. I think people here are mature enough to respect the wishes of others that we don't need this sort of thing. If things ever got out of control or logs were being producted by the 100's and/or posting replies went up by a ton, this would be a good solution. But not at this time.
I'd like to note as well... no one has stepped forward to say they'd like a non-comment type of log in this thread. If you are out there, we are interested in your thoughts and reasoning. We can help out by removing conversations to other locations that don't belong in your logs - just let us know! I'd also like you to know that you can do what TL does, make a freewebs account or livejournal and post here letting us know when its updated with a link - we are good with this - and it will allow you full control over everything without being restricted to a BBS type system, but it will still allow you to advertise it here so you can have this audience too.
Additionally, referring to the original post, if people are wanting to give feedback or ideas for changes to anything here it would be most productive to actually post here in the feedback forum or in PM to LM or myself. The feedback forum is for just that - feedback - and if people are mad/upset/etc and not bringing it up to anyone that can do something to help the situation (ie: admins/moderators) then the situation may go completely unheard. As what is important to you, or might be bugging you, might not be so obvious to us. We are not egotistic jerks who will ignore your ideas and banish you if you say something we disagree with or try to express an idea that is not currently implemented. We will listen, there's no need to have private conversations behind our backs and be all mad or upset thinking we'd never listen.
Those who have read my logs know I'm not an unkind or unfair person. I may disagree with things, but it doesn't mean it's "in one ear and out the other". This idea being talked about in this thread might be needed to be put into action 6 months from now if we get a major boost in log posting/member/etc - who knows - only time will tell. But I'd hope that y'all feel okay talking with us because we really aren't evil monsters just waiting to hit the Ban button
I hope that doesn't come off as too harsh - I'm not mad at anyone - I just want to keep the lines of communication open so everyone feels okay to talk or voice their thoughts without any negative effects.
