Hi everyone, since we seem to have such a broad range of home countries here, I wanted to know what kinds of celebrations happen where you're at for new years. Here in the states, there's always the huge ball-dropping ceremony in Times Square, when a massive orb of lights descends on a tower and touches down just as the new year strikes.

What large traditions do you have?

Lol - isn't this topic this?

Well - in Spain people await the famous "Doce Campanadas" (twelve bell chimes) and they try to eat a grape per chime, so it results in millions of Spaniards testing how wide their throats are to get all the grapes down (in Spain, they space out the chimes for about 3 seconds so people don't choke, or blink during a chime).

There are even food makes which prepare the twelve grapes without skin and pips specifically for the occasion. Cheesy:D

Actually that other topic is about Christmas/etc celebrations. This one is about new years specifically.

Everyone does things a little different ^^

I downplay New Year's. When I was a child, we would always take a trip down to Florida to visit my grandparents over winter break, so we would watch the ball drop and it would all be very boring.

When I got older, so did my grandparents, so they stopped going to Florida in the wintertime. I was in high school, and I would get invited to all these parties with different groups of friends, which were just excuses for underage drinking and trips to the hospital for stomach pumps.  Roll Eyes I quickly learned just to say no to those parties so that I could keep respecting my friends in the new year.

Anyway, New Year's seems pretty arbitrary to me. It's just counting from a random point in time. There have been many calendars that have been used throughout history. This is just one of them.

I usually work New Years Eve. Like I will be doing this year. As I have always worked Christmas. Last year I did get kind of naughty at work and invited 2 friends over to hang out in the Meeting Room with me. Thats about as naughty as I get. I work at a hotel on night shift all by myself. So noone would have known the wiser about what I did.

The past few years my friends and I have just been meeting up for a big get-together. Then, for the final countdown (best.song.ever  Grin) we usually gather in the street outside and then countdown.

It's all very hyped up, we make a big deal out of the countdown.. then.. "2... 1.. HAPPY NEW YEAR.. er... what now?"

But we always have fun, the party is more to bring us all together after a long year. We announce our resolutions but of course, throughout the night we usually break every one of them anyway.

I usually have my friends come over to my house for a party.  But, this year, my friend, Claire, just got her basement all finished with a brand new plasma TV so we are having the party at her house

It varies from year to year. This year will be important for me to have something to do then. My best friend come the 30th won't be on or around to talk to as much and it's a huge bummer for me, so I'll need something to cheer me up and keep me from being sad. He wouldn't want me sad, so I'll do my best to prevent myself from moping around.

My cousins come down every year on New Years and stay the whole night (we don't get much sleep, hehe). They come at around 5:00 and then we have supper. Then at around 9:00 we go over to the park, which is right across the street from my house and light fire works. After that we go back and have a little party and watch a bunch of our favorite movies, listen to music and play board games. Then when 12:00 comes we all ring in the new year by running outside and lighting little sparklers and yell out happy new year Cheesy After all that we are usually pretty tired and end up falling asleep, even if we don't want to.

Then on New Years day we have a nice brekfast and then in the night everyone goes up to my grandparents house for supper again! Smiley I like New Years, but not nearly as much as I like Christmas. I have only started liking New Years in the past couple of years.
