What's the difference between an UraTama and a V3?  I'm interested in getting an UraTama, and since you guys are the experts, maybe you can help me out?

well i dont know from having a uratama but from what i know the uratama has the ability to get a job and go to school.
im sure tigerlily013 will give you a more in depth description of it but thats all i know.

V3 bases more in Keitai than in Uratama. But there is no actual japanese counterpart for V3 so it's like bases into nothing as V2 bases into Keitai (the programming) and V3 has Keitai's covers with that tiny antennae.

Becoming V4 bases into Entama/Uratama with Entama's characters and normal black/grey LCD screen (Uratama has blue/grey screen) and En/Uratama character growth set into education/occupation achievement.
As in Entama/Uratama characters go first to kindergarten (toddler), then into school (teens) and after that get to choose occupation (adults). Different occupations have different minigames, around total 20 different games.

So V3 = enchanced Keitai with Entama's online features.

V4 = english Entama

Kokuma definitely has some bright ideas and so on about the comparison. I own 3 uratamas and am using 2 of them so here's my difference comparison as well...

Physical look: V3's are many colours and styles as are uratamas. However what the V3 lacks is a bigger antenna with a star on the top of it. The uratama has this antenna and star. The pxels are also different. V3's have black pixels like majority of pets. Uratamas however have blue pixels.

Gameplay: V3's are basically like the other connections in the new tama series. Grow, play games, eat, poop disapline etc. The Uratama has this AND the fact you can get jobs, get dating service cards to summon mystery mates, and games/food/items that help you gain points in a specific category like Humour/Comedy, Gorgeous and/or Passion. So uratamas are more complex in game play.

Functions: Both uratama and V3 have food, game, poop, and friend options. What the uratama has more of is more functions to use such as mail, more abilties to connect to other machines, cooking.

Overall: If you want something more challenging to learn and something that isn't in english, get uratama. If you want simple addiction, V3.
