I'm going to Japan this December, so I'll be purchasing one (or two) there. Just wondering, what is on the DVD that comes with some of them? This will help me decide if I should just purchase the ones without the DVD or the ones with the DVD..

At the moment, we have no idea what is on the DVD..Most likely just some kind of interactive feature of some sort..But I'm sure you already gathered that. Tongue I myself didn't purchase the DVD with the FamiTama because it's a different region or whatever so it probably doesn't play in normal USA/Canadian DVD players..Sad

Pretty sure it is an interactive feature. As far as I can tell from the site you enter in a password, play games on the DVD, then you get a password to put in your Famitama.

Now as far as I can tell the web page http://tamagotch.channel.or.jp/toy/famitama/dvd.html says that you enter a login password onto the DVD ("TamaTV") and then you enter the logout number back into your Famitama to get an item.

I know what a couple of the activities are called and I'll guess the some of the ones I don't know. Hopefully my guesses aren't too far off.

1. Gotchi Super News
2. A TV show?
3. Repotchi's quiz show?
4. Huh
5. Mametchi's soccer goal?
6. Gotchi Dance (the site says Rizumu de Gotchi Dance)
7. Huh
8. Dynamic Super Diet (the site says Dainamikku Kazoku no Super Diet)
9. Gaidotchi's TV Shopping (the site says Gaidotchi no Wakuwaku TV Shopping)

Don't forget that DVDs have region codes on them, so they will only play in DVD players that match their region code. Do you have a Region 2 or regionless DVD player? If not, you will be unable to play the DVDs on your DVD player.

Here's the list of countries that are in Region 2 (from Wikipedia):

Albania, Andorra, Bahrain, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, European Union, Faroe Islands, Georgia, Germany, Greenland, Guernsey, Iceland, India, Iran, Iraq, Isle of Man, Israel, Japan, Jersey, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Lesotho, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Qatar, Russian Federation, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Slovakia, South Africa, Swaziland, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, Vatican City State, Yemen

So if you don't live in any of the above countries, native, unmodified DVD players will not be able to play Japanese DVDs.

Computer CD and DVD devices itself are regionless, but the player softwares want to stick in one region so they are not against copyright laws or something.
I have CyberLink PowerDVD player software and I could change the region of the software 3 times before it "locked" the feature. I think Windows Media Player/Media Center doesn't have even that 3, just 1 so you can change the region to your homecountry's region if it's defaulty the wrong one. Yes, and you can't set the region to "0" (= regionfree) in player softwares.

You can find softwares from internet that let you hack the playing softwares and change them to region 0.
I haven't look for those so I don't know which ones there are available and where to look for them.

You can also set most of the DVD players to region code 0 with simple code entered with buttons.
Example my friend has SilverCrest DVD player (SilverCrest is basicly cheap European bootleg of Panasonic Tongue) and I found instructions from web how to change it to be regionfree (region 0) player and he could watch movie he got as present from USA.

For instructions how to set your (hardware) DVD player into region 0, google keywords "region free dvd player codes".
