I went to target today and I saw these interesting looking things called Funkeys by the virtual pets.  There was a Funkeys Starter Kit, which includes this connection thing, and two "Funkeys" and you can buy many other Funkeys seperately for 5 dollars each. They're pretty cute, and I guess if you put each funkey in the connector thing, it opens up games and such.  I don't really know a whole lot about them though...They look pretty cute though! Tongue

What may not be virtual pets to you could be to someone else. You should try'em before you jump to conclusions Smiley I'll have to read up on them to make my conclusions Wink

If you are right, it would be nice for you to explain yourself, because it seems to me that you randomly just threw that out there.  It was kind of rude, also.
From what I read about, they're little animals that you can buy, and then you put them in a connector thing and you play with them in a virtual world.  So what part of that is not a virtual pet?

By vpets I think he/she expect some movements and talk/sound being done by the specific pet. Funkeys don't move at all. They make sounds, though, eh? I'm not sure about the sound part, that's why I'm asking.
So without the "connctor thing" that connects 'em to their virtual pet community and internet they're just a bunch of toys, really. :x
Though I think they could communiacte with anther Funkeys. Anyhow, my point is: One Funkey without a connector or another Funkey pal equals one lifeless toy.

This is a confusing way to define vpet to me, because the original Tamagotchi didn't connect to anything either...?

Heh, I looked them up to try to figure out what you guys were talking about, and this discussion has failed to reveal one fundamental fact about Funkeys: they are just little plastic figurines! They don't look anything like Tamagotchis. No screen, no buttons, just a plastic figure. They just come with a CD-ROM to install software on your computer so you can play online. There's also a hardware "hub" that connects to your computer via USB.

So certainly it would require a very liberal definition of "vpet" to include this toy.

Precisely.
The original Tamagotchi's where still not toys, well, at least not the typical ones. They did(still do hopefully) move around inside of their shells, make some cute/annoying sounds and had loads of needs.
If you neglected it too much, or didn't care at all they'd end up dead, no?
Funkeys wont, unless you break it.
Funkeys are just...err, what are they if not toys or vpets? O_O

*Confussed* Elana, you've got me confussed again. ;(

My opinion:

Funkeys are toys that come with software DVD included, that lets you join interactive virtual world by placing the plastic figurine to a hub that connects to PC, and you can change the character you move in virtual world with changing different plastic figurine to the hub.

Funkey figurines are not Vpets themselves, and the software which enable you to conquer some Funkey-themed virtual spaces in internet with Funkey characters isn't either a "virtual pet".

My judgement is that Funkeys are not VPs, they are toys with online features.
